Animal Swap Meets are one-day events where people sell and buy small animals, farming supplies, and sometimes “just plain junk.” Here you can find people looking for pets, for livestock, or for an inexpensive bundt pan. People selling a wide variety of birds, puppies, and exotic animals such as alligators, or even a kangaroo. How these sales started and how they are advertised is still a mystery to me. I stumbled across one while out photographing one Sunday morning. Before then I had never heard of them. Nowadays as family farms are quickly being replaced by large-scale food production, these events still draw the smaller farmers and the local people who support them.
